To live with a depressed person.
Supporting your loved one is probably one of the most challenging things to do. It’s an emotionally strange path you have to walk.
There are no Band-Aids you can put on – nor wounds to tend to.
Every day is a check-in to see where he or she stands for the moment. Support is hard and sometimes saying less is better.
Here are some things not to say:
• Just think positive.
• You have so much to be grateful for
• It’s just in your head – get over it
• There are other people who are going through a lot worse than you are.
• Go for a walk
A few things to remember about what to say:
• You don’t have to go through this alone.
• Even though I don’t understand what you’re going through, I’m here for you.
• You can count on me – I want to support you.
• It’s okay to not be okay.
• Do you want to talk about how you feel?
Just being around and going about your business makes all the difference in the world in their life.
Your words are worth much more than you realize and think.
Be patient, considerate and let them know they are not alone.
